A Blessing in Disguise

By Eddie Kendralla

Two teams were happy when Lamar Odom resigned with the Lakers last week: the Lakers and the Bulls. While the first is obvious, the latter may have you scratching your head. Why should Bulls fans be excited that Lamar Odom is a Laker for the next three, maybe four, years?
Well for starters, by opting to sign with the Lakers over the Heat, it keeps Odom out of the Eastern conference and greatly weakens the Miami Heat for the upcoming season. But the repercussions are far greater than that. Indications were that if the Heat were successful in landing Odom, they would then turn their focus to Carlos Boozer and try to seriously contend this season. Now it appears the heat will not pursue Boozer and their roster will remain very similar to the team that finished 43-39 last year.

With Dwyane Wade a free agent at the end of the season, has said he wants to see improvement this season before he would consider resigning with the Heat. Without Odom and Boozer it is doubtful the team will finish much better than last season, especially with the Cavs, Celtics and Magic all making improvements. If that is indeed the case, odds are Dwyane Wade will likely test the free agent market, and the Bulls will definitely come calling.

Is it a sure thing Wade, a Chicago native, will be sporting the red and black in 2010? Absolutely not. But was Odom resigning with the Lakers another piece to the puzzle? I believe so. And with a potential dream backcourt of Rose and Wade, it’s never too early to dream.
